Hard-Boiled Urban Fantasy

Hard-Boiled Urban Fantasy, also known as Urban Fantasy Noir (after the movie genre 'film noir') is a subgenre of urban fantasy that incorporates the gritty, cynical, and often cynical tone of classic hard-boiled detective fiction. The protagonist is typically a world-weary and morally ambiguous individual—often a private investigator, monster hunter, or magical mercenary—who operates on the fringes of society. They navigate a world where magic and supernatural creatures exist but are often hidden and dangerous, and they deal with complex cases that blend supernatural threats with human corruption. The stories are characterized by their dark atmosphere, fast-paced action, and focus on the protagonist's struggle against both supernatural adversaries and their own personal demons.

This is the genre where I write under the pen name Steven Black.

Introducing Aris Blake Carpenter

For whom is this series?

ABC Paranormal Investigations is a series that tries to embody the classical, cynical tone of hard-boiled novels of old, but fuses that with modern Urban Fantasy.

If you enjoy a protagonist struggling through his problems with a blend of dry, gallows humor and his own moral codex, chances are you might like this.

He's a former wizard, and he used to really good at it, too. Those times are long gone, due to something he can't really remember, although it is important. And it will become even more important as time marches on. The more he learns about himself, the higher the stakes rise.

Follow him on his adventures, as he struggles to make a living out of being a magical Null in a city where there's magic on every corner and the things that go bump in the night have names like Ralph.
